In the image, two tragedies, induced by human activities, can be seen: 1. The green vegetations around the hill of Weija-Gbawe are being cutdown while illegal sand/gravel winning activities are being carried out. 2. The vegetations around the Weija Dam reservoir are being cutdown and illegally burned.This negatively affects the water holding capacity of the reservoir.
Vegetations around river bodies intercepts and slows rainfall hitting the ground. They substantially reduce the volume and rate of stormwater runoff, even dam collapse. This helps protect soils around water bodies from erosion and reduces flash flooding.
While the town is earthquake prone, there is a high possibility all the houses in the valley can be submerged by a mudslide. Likewise, a collapse of the dam reservoir can submerge all the houses since all the vegetation covers around it has been depleted.
