Water-borne diarrhoeal pathogens accumulate in river bodies and cause many of the sources of drinking and irrigation waters to be contaminated.
The Keta Lagoon and Anyanui River, including their tributaries, flow through nearby riparian communities within the eastern coast of Ghana. Due to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in these communities, sewage and residues from inhabitants are deposited in these river bodies. The release of faecal pollutants into surface waters may create environmental reservoirs of faeces-derived microorganisms, including pathogens. This makes water and sediments a repository of faecal pollution.
To identify pathogenic agents causing diarrhoea in these water bodies, the C2R-CD project has been sampling sediments for these water bodies using an Ekman grab sediment sampler for laboratory analysis.
The expected outcomes of the study will inform policy formulation and actions by the Anloga District and Keta Municipal Assemblies for better health outcomes for all.
