By removing too much sediment from rivers and beaches, sand mining leads to erosion and shrinking of river banks, as well as loss of beaches.
Estuaries can recede due to sand mining. All these destructive effects of sand mining ultimately deepen the impact of a tidal wave and the loss of fertile lands and property. The recent floods are already telling us how our future would be if we do not act now.
While we may not be able to relocate our ecological zone, we can put in measures that would help mitigate the potential negative impact that we may face in the future.
As part of the C2R-CD project, we are generating long-term hydrological data series along the eastern and central coasts of Ghana. We aim among other things, to generate relevant data/information that will contribute to understanding the role of the biophysical environment, including climate change in selected coastal areas of Ghana.
